GOD’S UNSPEAKABLE GIFT

“Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.”
—2 Corinthians 9:15

 An unspeakable love sought me.
An unspeakable gift bought me.
Unspeakable grace is wrought in me.
Unspeakable joy is brought to me.

Today Christ says to troubled hearts, “Fear not—I have God’s message of great joy for you.”  Instead of fear, we can have joy.  His joy is not superficial and transient.  It is the deep, abiding joy that comes from a heart at rest in God — a heart that knows the reality of His promises.  Fear not: for I am with thee” (Isaiah 43:5). “Fear not; I will help thee” (Isaiah 41:13).  Freedom from fear brings fullness of joy.

They were all looking for a King

GRANDMA’S CHRISTMAS LETTER

Dear Loved One,

Please! Don’t give me things for Christmas that must be stored in bureau drawers or stacked upon a shelf.  In your blessedness of giving, wrap yourself in one sweet hour of time to spend with me.  On your dear youthful package place a fresh green sprig for love, a tiny bow of timeless white for prayer, and to represent your heart, a red, red rose. You see, memories of a kindness given and the sharing of one’s thought far outlast the joy that comes from things that sit upon a shelf.

With love always,

                                                                 Grandma

THE WHISPERED NAME

Another year of ministry ends,
Relieving so many of guilt and shame;
A sinner believes—a new life begins,
Because in his heart, he whispers that Name.

Another Christmas season dawns
Bringing its message, ever the same:
A mother sighs; A Baby yawns,
And in His heart He whispers your name.

A baby’s hands in Bethlehem
Were small and softly curled.
But held within their dimpled grasp
The hope of all the world.

                          —Leslie Savage

MEET ME AT THE MANGER

Meet me at the manger,
Leave the rush behind;
Let’s go see the Baby
Who came to save mankind.

Leave the haste and worry,
Forget the gifts and trees;
Let us seek the Savior,
To worship on our knees.

All the balls and tinsel
Can wait an hour or two,
Jesus is the center
Of all we have to do.

All the food and trimmings
Will linger for a while,
Let’s rather go to Bethlehem
To see the Baby smile.

Angels sing a chorus,
The star shines oh so bright!
We’ve come to worship Jesus
On this holy night.

If we would just remember
That all we say and do
Starts back in the manger,
We’d feel true joy anew.

Every decoration,
Every carol sung,
Celebrates the Baby—
Jesus, God’s own Son!

So meet me at the manger,
Let’s bow with humble hearts,
For in the Christ Child’s presence
Is where Christmas truly starts.

ONLY JESUS

Wherever I go — only Thou!
Wherever I stand — only Thou!
Just Thou; again Thou!
Always Thou! Thou, Thou, Thou!
When things are good — Thou!
When things are bad — Thou!
Thou, Thou, Thou!

THE BEST OF LIFELINE

  By Rev. Larry W. Greiner

In a little flat in London one Christmas Eve, writes Edmond Segrave, not a single gift had been purchased for the bright boy of the house.  It was not that his parents didn’t love him — they just didn’t have a penny to spare.  “He always loved to read,” recalled the unhappy father, clutching at straws.  “I know a grumpy old publisher who always entertains his authors and staff in high style the day before Christmas.  Maybe he’ll be in good enough humor to give me a damaged book or something from his overstock.”  The father’s hunch paid off.  “Help yourself in the shipping room,” said the publisher indulgently.

So it was on Christmas morning there was no pile of toys to confuse the boy — just one small package.  But his eyes shone with joy when he opened it, and the parents shared in the glow.  A few days later, the publisher received a note from the boy. “Thank you,” it read, “for the magic carpet, the fountain of life, and the beautiful golden key.”

“What’s all this?” grumbled the publisher, “I just gave the boy a book.”  To the old publisher it was just another book, but to the young boy it was filled with gifts of imagination.

How amazing it is to think that God gave us the great gift of His Word and yet to so many it is just another book.  Oh Christian, may we realize the gifts and treasures that can be ours just by opening the Scriptures and asking God to reveal to us, by His Holy Spirit, the riches of His Word.  Let us not neglect any longer the wonderful Word of God which is “a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.”  This Christmas, “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another”(Colossian 3:16 ).  Only then can we experience the true peace and joy of Christmas, in the midst of an ungodly culture.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16 )

DIVINE POETRY

I saw God write a gorgeous poem this very morning.  With the fresh sunbeam for a pencil, on the broad sheet of level snow, the diamond letters were spelled out one by one, till the whole was aflame with poetry. —Phillips Brooks

HEART’S CRY

“Holy Spirit, stir my soul.  Draw me to the secret closet of prayer with You.  May there be no more hurried prayers from me.  Discipline me to wait on You, to cry out, to not give up until You fill me to the full.  And give me Your promised peace of mind.  Supply me with Your quiet rest and assurance that You’ll see me through whatever comes.”

THE PEACE OF GOD

“These things I said unto you that you might have peace.”  The life of the soul is to move without jar or discord.  It shall be like a quiet engine-house, in which every wheel co-operates with every other wheel, and there is no waste or friction in the holy place.  “All that is within me” blesses God’s holy name.  And yet, while peace reigns within, there may be tribulation without!  “In the world you shall have tribulation.”  Here is a peace which is not broken by the noise and assault of brutal circumstances.  The most tempestuous wind cannot disturb the quiet serenity of the stars.  When the world stones me, not one grain of its gritty dust need enter the delicate workings of my soul.   That was the peace of my Lord, and it is my Lord who says to me: “My peace I give unto you!”  So “be of good cheer” my soul!  The Lord has “overcome the world,” and thou shalt share His victory.

—John Henry Jowett (1863-1923)

FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

The martyred Jim Elliot expressed fellowship with God in this way:  “To stand by the shadows of a friendly tree with the wind tugging at your coattail and the heavens hailing your heart, to gaze and glory and to give oneself again to God, what more could a man ask?  Oh, the fullness, pleasure, sheer excitement of knowing God on earth.  I care not if I never raise my voice again for Him, if only I may love Him, please Him.  Mayhap, in mercy, He shall give me a host of children that I may lead through the vast star fields to explore His delicacies whose fingers’ ends set them to burning.  But if not, if only I may see Him, smell His garments, and smile into my Lover’s eyes, ah, then, not stars, nor children, shall matter — only Himself.”

“As the hart (deer) panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God”(Psalm 42:1).

BETHLEHEM

Bethlehem ?  An inn’s stable? The Savior of the world? Why Bethlehem ?  My mind, rebelling, questioned until the Light of the world shone upon the dark and secret recesses of my own heart and I saw why Bethlehem , why hell, why the cross, why the empty tomb, why God became man for me.

THE THRONG PASSED BY

This new Baby— could He be the hope of Israel , the Savior promised?

Poor shepherds came to worship Him, but the throng passed by.

Joseph, a just man and tender, protected the child, loved Him, worked hard to provide, but the throng passed by.

Mary magnified her God with wonders to her heart, praise on her lips and mother-love at its best, but the throng passed by.

The poor shepherds are now immortal. Joseph remembered as a just and kindly man. Mary called blessed by all generations, but the throng passed by.
