WORSHIP

Worship is giving to God of all that is your best.   This cannot be done without the sacrifice of the acclaim and adulation of the world.  If we were to only pause for a few moments and take stock, we would see how close we all come to sacrilege each day.

Do we give Him the best of our time?
Do we give Him the best of our energies?
Do we give Him the best of our thinking?
Do we give Him the best of our wealth?
Do we give Him the best of our dreams and plans?

Or does the world get our best while God merely gets the leftovers?

SOMEDAY HE'LL MAKE IT PLAIN

Having suffered much in his own life,
the eminent and afflicted poet William Cowper expressed it beautifully:

Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His works in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

THE SHADOW

A moving story is told about a renowned preacher who lost his young wife.  In the confusion of her fresh grief, his little daughter came to him and asked why it was that if Jesus has died for our sins we still have to die.  He waited for the appropriate illustration with which to help her young mind understand what God has done for us.  On the way to the funeral, their car was behind a big truck.  Drawing her attention to the truck, he looked at his daughter and asked if she had to be run over, would she rather be run over by a truck or by its shadow on the side of the road.

 "Why of course," she said, "the shadow would be better, because it would not hurt as much."  He paused and answered her gently, "That is what Jesus has done for you.  With His death upon the cross, He let the truck of God's judgment pass over Him.  Only the shadow of death goes over us now."

RUN TO THE FATHER

Every father loves it when his children believe their father is out for their own good, and God is no exception.  You simply cannot run from your problems but you can always run to your Father.  He's waiting.  See you at the foot of His throne.  --Steve Brown

Out of his wisdom Robert Morrison of China wrote, "The great fault, I think, in our mission is that no one likes to be second."  The world has yet to see what could happen if everyone lost the desire to get the glory.  Wouldn’t it be a marvelous place if nobody cared who got the credit? --J. Oswald Sanders

Struggle, yes, it's part of living.
Nothing’s gained on beds of ease;
But when our heart is set on Jesus,
Struggle drives us to our knees.

BEST OF LIFELINE

By Rev. Larry W. Greiner

A pastor of a little church in a small town became exceedingly discouraged.  He brooded over his trials to such an extent that he became a constant grumbler.  He found fault with his brethren because he thought they did not treat him well.

One day a fellow minister was asked to assist in a special service.  After the service, the unhappy pastor invited the other minister to his home for dinner.  While waiting for the meal he began to share his story.  "You have no idea of my troubles, and one of the greatest is that my brethren in the church treat me very badly."  The other asked, "Did they ever spit in your face?"  "No, they haven’t come to that."  “Did they ever hit you?"  "No." "Did they ever crown you with thorns?"  To this last question he gave no response but bowed his head.

The other replied, "Your Master and mine was treated this way, and all His disciples fled and left Him in the hands of wicked men.  Yet He opened not His mouth.”"

The effect was extraordinary. Both ministers bowed in prayer and earnestly sought the mind of Christ.  The discontented pastor became a changed man.  He labored faithfully, and many souls were brought to Christ in the days that followed.

A deacon wrote to the visiting minister and said, "Your visit with our pastor had a remarkable influence.  He’s different.  We never hear him complain, and he labors more prayerfully and zealously.  To God be the glory!"

"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem the other better than themselves.  Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.  LET THIS MIND BE IN YOU WHICH WAS ALSO IN CHRIST JESUS;  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."  (Phil. 2: 3-8)

In my darkest night He is the guiding star;
In my sinfulness He is the forgiving heart;
A willing ear for each earnest prayer.
He is a shoulder for burdens I cannot bear.
Sweet company from now through all eternity.

HUGS 'N TUGS

By Wendy Greiner Lefko

Just last month we took our second "child" to college.  I don't know where the years have gone!  But I’m finding they seem to fly by faster as time goes on.  This past year has brought lots of changes to our family, from moving to health issues to children growing up.  I even had to get reading glasses!  I feel like it's been one perpetual merry-go-round with changing scenery after every rotation.  But the one thing I've found to be constant and unchanging is the Lord's presence.  Through every season, through every turn in the road, He's been there, always.  Sometimes it feels as though everything has changed, except for Him.  And I believe that is the point He wants to bring each of us to at one time or another.  It is the only way we can find out just how faithful and sovereign He truly is.  He keeps our footing firm when the ground that we thought was so secure beneath us shakes with the tremors of uncertainty.  It is then that He reveals Himself to be the Rock on which we stand, and only then can we clearly see how firm a foundation He is.

One thing we can know for sure is that in this life change will come.  But those are the times when He can teach us the most about Himself and ourselves.  Are we resting on the Rock of His promises or on the shifting sands of this world?  If we remain in Him, He will prove Himself faithful and true, through every change of season in this life.  I'm so thankful for His unchanging grace!

"Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?  If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me" (Psalm 139:7-10).

THE OUTSTRETCHED HAND

In Michelangelo's painting of God reaching out to Adam, it’s interesting to see how outstretched God’s arm is.  Every muscle on His face is contorted, and the hand is reaching as far as possible to make contact.  By contrast, Adam lackadaisically lets a limpish hand dangle with apathy in an attitude that seems to say, "If it meets it meets."  That reflects the contrasting inclinations of the heart very well.   God seeks one in the midst of all creation, one who will understand His heart and be willing to be clasped in His hand.

Will you be such a friend to God?

If you are concerned because God doesn’t seem to be answering your prayers, consider the following.

If the request is wrong, God says: No
If the timing is wrong, God says: Slow
If you are wrong, God says: Grow
But if the request is right, the timing is right, and you are right, God says: Go!

Dennis Kinlaw, one-time president of Asbury College told of the time he held his little grandchild in his arms for the first time.  As his eyes flooded with tears he wondered, "Is there anyone who feels about me the way I feel about this little one?"  The answer was a resounding "Yes, and even more--God Himself."

ABUNDANT GRACE

Annie Johnson Flint lived most of her life in pain.  Orphaned early in life, her body was embarrassed by incontinence, weakened by cancer, and twisted and deformed by rheumatoid arthritis.  She was incapacitated for so long that according to one eyewitness she needed seven or eight pillows around her body just to cushion the raw sores she suffered from being bedridden. Yet her autobiography is rightly called "The Making of the Beautiful."  Almost like a minstrel from heaven she penned words that touch the heart in its despairing moments.  One of her best-known poems, put to music, reads:

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
To added affliction, He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials His multiplied peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father's full giving has only begun.

His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His power has no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS

  When businessman Allen Emery was in the wool business, he once spent an evening with a shepherd on the Texas prairie.  During the night, the long wail of coyotes pierced the air.  The shepherd's dogs growled and peered into the darkness.  The sheep, which had been sleeping, lumbered to their feet, alarmed, bleating pitifully.  The shepherd tossed more logs onto the fire, and the flames shot up.  In the glow, Allen looked out and saw thousands of little lights.  He realized those were reflections of the fire in the eyes of the sheep.

"In the midst of danger," he observed, "the sheep were not looking out into the darkness but were keeping their eyes set in the direction of their safety, looking toward the shepherd. I couldn't help but think of Hebrews 12:2--'Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.'"
