THE NAME

There is a name, a wondrous name
Of infinite and endless fame,
Of God beloved, by saints revered,
By angels and archangels feared,
Ordained by God ere world began,
Revealed by angels unto man,
Proclaimed by men, believed, adored
By hearts in prayer and praise outpoured.
The theme of prophet, priest, and king,
The word of which sweet psalmists sing,
By pilgrims blessed, by sufferers sung,
The last word breathed by martyr’s tongue,
The name most precious and sublime,
Supreme in space, supreme in time,
Destined to live and conquer all
Till all knees everywhere shall fall
And tongues confess—what God proclaims—
This name to be the Name of names,
The name which in high heaven will be
The One Name of eternity;
Then, O my soul, its praise forth tell,
Jesus the Name ineffable!

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

“One day the angels and all of the redeemed will cry out in beautiful harmony: ‘Hail to the King!  Worthy is the Lamb!’  Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord.  That will be an awesome sight.  But even now that same One, full of majesty and splendor, bids us daily to a private encounter with Him.  We are called into the presence of the King, His Majesty the Lord Jesus Christ.  We experience a sense of awe and wonder as we come before Him.  He is the Creator of the universe and the Lord of life.”

WONDROUS FAITH

By Wendy Greiner Lefko

The wondrous things that God has planned
Will come, though not by sight;
For only when we trust in Him
Does He reveal His might.

To see what lies ahead of us
Would take away our need
To look to God to light our way
And guide our wandering feet.

The faith that keeps us wondering
Will also keep us strong;
In knowing that we follow Him
We know we can’t go wrong.

THE BEST OFLIFELINE

By Rev. Larry W. Greiner

John Piper tells the story of the conversion and execution of Tokichi Ichii, a man hanged for murder in Tokyo in 1918. Tokichi Ichii had been sent to prison more than twenty times and was known as being cruel as a tiger.  On one occasion, after attacking a prison official, he was gagged and bound, and his body suspended in such a way that “my toes barely reached the ground.”  But he stubbornly refused to say he was sorry for what he had done.  Just before being sentenced to death, Tokichi was sent a New Testament by two Christian missionaries, Miss West and Miss McDonald.  After a visit from Miss West, he began to read the story of Jesus’ trial and execution. His attention was riveted by the sentence, “And Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’”  That sentence transformed his life.

Tokichi Ichii wrote: “I stopped. I was stabbed to the heart, as if by a five-inch nail. What did the verse reveal to me?  Shall I call it the love of the heart of Christ? Shall I call it His compassion?  I do not know what to call it.  I only know that with an unspeakable grateful heart I believed.”

Tokichi accepted his death sentence as “the fair, impartial judgment of God.” The Word that brought him to faith also sustained his faith. Near the end, Miss West directed him to 2 Corinthians 6:8-10 concerning the suffering of the righteous—“as sorrowing, yet always rejoicing.”  The words moved him deeply and he wrote, “People will say that I must have a very sorrowful heart because I am daily awaiting the execution of the death sentence.  This is not the case.  I feel neither sorrow nor distress nor any pain. Locked up in a prison cell six feet by nine feet, I am infinitely happier than I was in the days of my sinning when I did not know God. Day and night I am talking with Jesus Christ.  ‘As poor, yet making many rich’, certainly does not apply to the evil life I led before I repented.  But perhaps in the future, someone in the world may hear that the most desperate villain that ever lived repented of his sins and was saved by the power of Christ, and so may come to repent also.  Then it may be though I am poor myself, I shall be able to make many rich.”

The Word sustained him to the end. On the scaffold with great humility and earnestness he uttered his last words: “My soul, purified, today returns to the City of God .”   Many times we do not hear of “thief on the cross” conversions but they do happen.  Don’t stop praying for your friends, loved ones or enemies. Keep pressing to the throne. God is able to save them.

“And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into Thy kingdom.  And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with Me in Paradise (Luke 23:4—43)

HOW TO CHANGE A FLAT ATTITUDE

“A wrong attitude is like a flat tire: it needs to be changed before you can get anywhere.” —Anonymous

STEP ONE: PULL OVER AND STOP.  You must stop and admit that your attitude is wrong and must be changed.  As you do this, try to specifically pinpoint what it is about your attitude that is wrong and why you have this attitude.

STEP TWO: JACK IT UP OFF THE GROUND.  Lift that attitude to God in prayer.  Let Him help you set up some reasonable goals for yourself in changing your attitude.  The more you trust and depend on Him to keep you from falling into the same old patterns, the sooner you will see the change.

STEP THREE: REMOVE IT AND REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE.  Replace that wrong attitude with a positive attitude.  Positive attitudes come from meditating on the Scriptures and on the goodness of the Lord.  (See Philippians 4:8).

STEP FOUR: LOWER IT BACK IN PLACE .  Get ready to put that positive attitude into practice.   Do a Bible study on the new attitude and seek specific guidelines for using it.

STEP FIVE: NOW START THE ENGINE AND TAKE OFF!  Continue on your destination: “Do not be hearers of the word only, but doers also” (James 1:22 ), and “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5).

An elderly lady who bore her years remarkably well was asked by a child if she were young or old.  “My dear,” she replied, “I have been young a very long time.”

TUNED FOR UNITY

If you have one hundred concert pianos, and you tune the second piano to the first, and the third piano to the second, the fourth piano to the third, until you have tuned all one hundred pianos accordingly, you will still have discord and disharmony.  But if you tuned each piano to the same tuning fork, you would have unity and harmony.  So, too, in the body of Christ, when we each tune ourselves and our lives to Christ’s we will have unity.

Some men are like blisters—they don’t appear until the work is done.

FORGIVENESS

The moment a man wrongs me I must forgive him.  Then my soul is free.  If I hold the wrong against him I sin against God and against him and jeopardize my forgiveness with God.  Whether the man repents, makes amends, asks my pardon or not, makes no difference.  I have instantly forgiven him.  He must face God with the wrong he has done, but that is his affair and God's and not mine save that I should help him according to Matthew 18:15, etc.  But whether this succeeds or not and before this even begins, I must forgive him. —Lenski

A SELF CHECK

The pharmacist of the town drugstore overheard a young boy talking on a pay telephone.  “Hello, sir, I was calling to see if you needed a lawn boy.  Oh, you have one.  Well, is he adequate? Oh, he is!  Thank you, I was just checking,” said the young boy.

The pharmacist then said to the boy, “Sorry you didn’t get the job, son.”

“Oh, no, sir,” said the boy.  “I’ve got the job.  I was just calling to check up on myself.”

I COULD TELL WHERE THE LAMPLIGHTER WAS BY THE TRAIL HE LEFT BEHIND HIM.—Selected

WHICH ARE YO U?

Isn’t it strange that princes and kings
And clowns that caper in sawdust rings
And common folks like you and me
Are builders of eternity?
To each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and book of rules;
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.

LARRY’S KOREAN KORNER

With sadness I must share with you that the Korean ministry in which I have been involved has ended, though not by choice.  This will be my last Korean Korner in Hearthstone. The Korean church where I had conducted the Korean youth ministry for the past few years has come on hard times. The young Korean-speaking Pastor, who had been there less than a year, resigned this past summer after causing serious problems in the church. This resulted in the exodus of many young families. We saw the church congregation dwindle down to just a few families who were left to carry on. Because of this, the financial situation worsened until they now cannot afford to pay for a new pastor.  Also they can no longer afford a youth program since most of the youth have left with their parents. I continued to carry on our Friday night youth meetings for those who had been forced to leave the church with their parents but still wanted to continue the Bible studies. But, sadly, the church may close it’s doors, and with extremely heavy hearts we  have had to end our ministry there.  Please continue to pray for these Korean young people as they now locate in other churches.  Pray that the seed sown these past few years will bring forth much fruit. God gives the increase. I want to thank you for the prayerful support you gave while we were there.  We now await the revealing of God’s next open door.
