JOY—A DIFFERENT FREQUENCYJoy does not come from favorable human circumstances but it is often greatest when circumstances are the most painful and severe. Jesus told His disciples: "You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned to joy" (John 16:2). Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego rejoiced even though they were being cast into the fire. Daniel rejoiced when he was bound and cast into the lion's den. Paul and Silas rejoiced when they were cast into prison. Why? They were on a different frequency than the world. You can take a dog whistle and blow it loudly and nobody will pay any attention to it. But every dog in the neighborhood will perk up his ears. The dogs are on a different frequency than we are. They hear things we don’t hear. How is it possible for Christians to rejoice when everything seems to go wrong? They are on a frequency different than that of unbelievers. The world hears defeat. The believer hears VICTORY! The world hears condemnation. The believer hears MERCY! The world hears despair and sadness. The believer hears JOY! |

GOD'S HANDWRITING |
|
| God writes in characters too grand For our short sight to understand; We catch but broken strokes, and try To fathom all the mystery Of withered hopes, of death, of life, The endless war, the useless strife,— But there, with larger, clearer sight, —John Oxenham |

"Happiness is….." I’ve seen that phrase followed by many answers in everything from magazines to bumper stickers. As true as each thought may be, I think the most accurate ending would be "Happiness is different things to different people." To our kids happiness is a snow day. To me happiness is a school day! To our two-year-old daughter happiness is giving a bottle to her dolly, while happiness to our fifteen-year-old son is a game of one-on-one on the basketball court. Yet one thing is certain, life is full of happy and unhappy moments. It is neither possible nor appropriate to remain happy at all times. That is why God doesn’t promise happiness, but joy! I believe joy is more closely related to peace than it is to happiness. We can have peace in the midst of the storm, yet not experience happiness. Joy comes from the supernatural peace of knowing that God is in control and all things will work together for our good in the end, just as He promised. Circumstances and happenings bring happiness, but only the Lord can give true joy. His gift of joy shines its truest colors in the darkest of nights. I have witnessed this joy in the lives of fellow believers, but not necessarily in times of happiness. It was in the times of their deepest trials that the clearest evidence of their joy in the Lord shone brightest. It is this unspeakable joy that carries us through the roughest times, the times when happiness is most elusive. Often when people are asked what they want most for their children, they respond that they just want them to be happy. But I believe God wants more for them. We want to teach our children to grow in their relationship with the Lord to the point that they find pure joy in life regardless of circumstances, to find their joy in serving Jesus. "I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete" (John 15:11). |

LORD, I AM WILLING |

BEST OF LIFELINE |

When the great missionary Adoniram Judson was home on furlough, he passed through the city of Stonington, Connecticut. A young boy playing about the wharves at the time of Judson’s arrival was struck by the man’s appearance. Never before had he seen such a light on any human face. He ran up the street to a minister to ask if he knew who the stranger was. The minister hurried back with him, but became so absorbed in conversation with Judson that he forgot all about the impatient youngster standing near him. Many years afterward that boy, who could never get away from the influence of that wonderful face, became the famous preacher Henry Clay Trumbull. In a book of memoirs he penned a chapter entitled: "What a Boy Saw in the Face of Adoniram Judson." That lighted countenance had changed his life. Even as flowers thrive when they bend to the light, so shining, radiant faces come to those who constantly turn toward Christ. A true believer in Christ should radiate his joy in Christ. It’s easy to tell a Christian who is walking close to the Lord. There is a joy on their face that can’t be explained any other way. Webster’s Dictionary defines joy as "The emotion excited by the acquisition or expectation of good." For the Christian we might say it is "the emotion excited by the acquisition or expectation of Christ." Can others around you tell you are different by the joy on your face? Just as Adoniram Judson brought that boy to Christ through his joyful expression, so we too can bring the lost to Christ when we show the reality of our Savior through our countenance. The world is waiting to see this "joy unspeakable and full of glory." "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels" (Isaiah 61:10). |

JOY IS ON THE WAY! |
|
|
"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy As a third-century man was anticipating death, he penned these last words to a friend: "It's a bad world, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand times better than any pleasure of our sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. They are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people are the Christians—and I am one of them." Joy is something God has intended for all His saints throughout eternity. "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy" |

JOYFUL BENEFITS |

"Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore" (Psalm 16:11). A PLANNED PATH |

JOY IS NOT FOUND: |
|
|
In Unbelief—Voltaire was an infidel of the most pronounced type. He wrote: "I wish I had never been born." In Pleasure—Lord Byron lived a life of pleasure if anyone did. He wrote: "The worm, the canker, and grief are mine alone." In Money— Jay Gould, the American millionaire, had plenty of that. When dying, he said: "I suppose I am the most miserable man on earth." In Position and Fame—Lord Beaconsfield enjoyed more than his share of both. He wrote: "Youth is a mistake; manhood a struggle; old age a regret." In Military Glory—Alexander the Great conquered the known world in his day. Having done so, he wept in his tent before he said, "There are no more worlds to conquer." Where then is real joy found? The answer is simple — in Christ alone. "But let all those that put their trust in Thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because Thou defendest them: let them also that love Thy name be joyful in Thee" (Psalm 5:11). |

DON'T QUIT |
|
| When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit, Life is strange with its twists and turns, Don't give up though the pace seems slow— Success is failure turned inside out — So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit— —Anonymous |

"TEND IT FOR ME" |
|
| "Father, where shall I work today?" And my love flowed warm and free. Then He pointed me out a tiny spot, I answered quickly, "Oh, no, not that. Why, no one would ever see, Not that little place for me!" Art thou working for them or me? Nazareth was a little place, —Author unknown |

GOD'S WORKMANSHIP |

How He ruthlessly perfects How He hammers him and hurts him, How He bends but never breaks God knows what He's about. —Author unknown |

RUNNING LIFE'S COURSE WITH JOY |
|
| The following testimony was reportedly found in the office
of a young man following his martyrdom in Africa.
I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed. The die has been cast; I am a disciple of Jesus Christ; I am finished and done with low living, My face is set, I wont give up, shut, up, let up, I must go till He comes, "But none of these things move me, "The joy of the LORD is your
strength" If you would lead men to heaven, wear heaven on your face. — C.H. Spurgeon Joy is the flag that is flown from the castle of the heart when the King is in residence. |
