HOLD
MY HAND UNTIL MORNING
Recently our five-year-old granddaughter Grace slept over. She carefully laid out her sleeping blanket on the floor on Mom-mom’s side of the bed. After a time of devotions we turned out the lights. Grace reached up her hand and said, “Mom-mom, will you hold my hand until morning?” Mom-mom gladly obliged and held her hand until she fell asleep. Our Heavenly Father's hand is always extended to us in the dark hours of our pilgrimage. "He will not suffer thy foot to be moved. He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:3,4). "Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down for the LORD upholdeth him with His hand (Psalm 37:24). |

WORSHIP IN SUFFERING |
|
|
Suffering can be a friend to the one who has learned to worship. There is no hurt physically, psychologically, emotionally, or spiritually that God does not understand. He loves us greatly and He suffered greatly for us through the death of His Son, Jesus. When a true worshiper suffers, the door to the glory of God is opened to him. He enters into the fellowship of the sufferings of Christ. It is then that he is able to comprehend more fully the height and depth and breadth and width of the love of God. He learns to worship the worthy One in the midst of suffering. —Sammy Tippit |

Struggle, yes,
it’s part of living. Nothing’s gained
on beds of ease; But when our heart
is set on Jesus, Struggle drives us
to our knees. —M.R

THE BEST OF LIFELINE |

By Rev. Larry W. GreinerSome years ago a railroad wreck took a dreadful toll of life and limb in an eastern state. A train, loaded with young people returning from school, was stalled on a suburban track because of what is known as a “hot-box.” The limited was soon due, but a flagman was sent back to warn the engineer in order to avert a terrible rear-end collision. Thinking all was well, the crowd laughed and chatted while the train-hands worked on in fancied security. Suddenly the whistle of the limited was heard and on came the heavy train and crashed into the local, with horrible effect. The engineer of the limited saved his own life by jumping, and some days afterwards was hauled into court to account for his part in the calamity. A curious discrepancy in testimony occurred. He was asked, “Did you not see the flagman warning you to stop?” He replied, “I saw him. But he waved a yellow flag. I took it for granted all was well, and so went on, though slowing down.” The flagman was called, “What flag did you wave?” “A red flag, but he went by me like a shot.” “Are you sure it was red?” asked the lawyer. “Absolutely,” replied the flagman. Both insisted on the correctness of their testimony, and it was demonstrated that neither was color-blind. Finally the man was asked to produce the flag itself as evidence. After some delay he was able to do so, and then the mystery was explained. It HAD been red, but it had been exposed to the weather so long that all the red was bleached out, and it was a DIRTY YELLOW! Lives are lost because of preachers waving discolored
flags, preaching a gospel that excludes the blood of Jesus Christ.
Only the true red flag of salvation can save a sinner doomed to
death. “It
is the blood that maketh an
atonement for the soul” (Leviticus

It’s a cold and snowy afternoon. The view from the window is beautiful—trees, lawns, houses and streets covered as if in one fell swoop with a lustrous white blanket made of snow. Hot chocolate is being poured as slippers shuffle down the hall. Snowsuit zippers are being tugged tight to the necks of children who can’t wait another minute to pounce upon the mounds of fluffy white snow that seem to just be calling their name. It’s a glorious sight from any window and truly a wonder to behold—God’s glory at its best! No man on earth could create such splendor. At the same time, there is continuous news coverage on TV and radio of the effects that this snow storm is having locally. Roadways are covered in snow, cars are spinning out, malls are closing early, and folks are waiting out the storm until it lets up enough to head out and start shoveling driveways. This beautiful blanket of snow that brings such pleasure to the eye and joy to playful children is also a force of nature not to be taken lightly. The cold temperatures and blowing winds can damage exposed skin in a matter of minutes. The drifting snow carried by the strong gusts can lower visibility considerably. Many dangers abound amidst the beauty and wonder of a snowstorm. God has blessed mankind with a wild and wonderful world in which to live. The many forces of nature that are so beauteous to behold also bear the potential for destruction and deterioration. So too do many aspects of our lives as God’s children. All the joys He has surrounded us with, all the pleasures of earth, also hold potential for harm. From material wealth to human relationships, anything that becomes greater in our eyes than our love for our Lord has the potential to block our vision of seeing Him. If we expose our hearts to the elements of this world that may seem harmless at first, in time we will reap the damage to our very souls. God has given us an entire earth full of His goodness but if we do not enjoy His blessings within the framework and safety of His boundaries, if we venture outside His “yard” of safety into the streets of man’s permissiveness, we are sure to spin out of control eventually and reap the consequences. God has given us “richly all things to enjoy”. But just as parents want their children to enjoy the many blessings of life under the protection of loving boundaries for their own safety, so too our Heavenly Father
wants to provide a safe haven for us to fully experience an abundant life
of joy. “Charge
them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust
in uncertain riches, but in the living God, Who giveth us richly all
things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). |

A teen-age daughter turned in anger on her mother: “Mom you’re just trying to be a barricade on my road of happiness.” The godly mother went into her bedroom and wept. She couldn’t understand why her daughter resented the help she tried to give in a loving way. “You’re a BARRICADE on my road of happiness” echoed and re-echoed in her aching heart. Picking up the dictionary, she turned to the word “BARRICADE” and this definition: “A BARRICADE is anything that will obstruct the progress of the attack of an enemy.” The aching in her heart stopped, and she prayed, “O Lord, make me ever a Barricade in my daughter’s life. Help me to obstruct the progress, the attack of Satan, the enemy of her soul.” It’s just depraved human nature to resent
correction or advice. As
Isaiah put it: “We have turned
every one to his own way” (Isaiah. 53:6)
But as we grow older, we realize that the advice our parents gave
us was in our BEST interest, even though we resented it at the time.
May we be parents who heed the words of Paul: “Provoke
not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture (discipline)
and admonition of the Lord…For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, and powers, against the rulers of the darkness
of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places” (Ephesians. 6:4,1). —Selected |
