CULTIVATING
A THIRST FOR GOD

"O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water" (Psalm 63:1).

Ask yourself: "Where is the blessedness I knew when first I saw the Lord?" When or where was the highest peak in your experience with God? If you have lived at one time on a higher plane, then you will be aware that a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God is possible.

Determine what you consider the most important areas of life. If your earthly life were to suddenly end today, would God see that you valued eternal things more than the passing things of time? Are you willing from here on to give those matters priority wherever there is a clash?

Get to know God better by acquiring a deeper understanding of His character from the Bible. Does His Word tell you, in particular, that He is always good, whether you recognize it or not? If the Bible is clear that He is, are you willing to make a lifelong commitment to Him, no matter what He brings into your life?

Persevere in having quality time alone with God each day. The joyous memories of yesterday’s rendezvous with Him will increasingly excite you as you anticipate today’s.

(Adapted from "Thirsting After God" by Keith A. Price)

"I can take my telescope and look millions of miles into space; but I can go away to my room and in prayer get nearer to God and heaven than I can when assisted by all the telescopes of earth." —Isaac Newton

FAITH

Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it. Faith is trusting what the eye can’t see. Eyes see the prowling lion; faith sees Daniel’s angel. Eyes see storms; faith sees Noah’s rainbow. Eyes see giants, faith sees Canaan. Your eyes see your faults; your faith sees your Savior. Your eyes see your guilt; your faith sees Christ’s blood. Your eyes look in the mirror and see a sinner, a failure, a promise-breaker. But by faith you look in the mirror and see a robed prodigal bearing the ring of grace on your finger and the kiss of your Father on your face. —Max Lucado

HUGS 'N TUGS

By Wendy Greiner Lefko

(Wendy gave birth to a boy, Daniel Graham, on January 16. 2003. In place of her regular contribution to Hugs ‘N Tugs this month we have selected one of her poems. More "Hugs" will be on the way!!!)

Oh Lord, help me be
All the woman I can be —
A godly one,
Bringing glory to Your name.
Help my life shine for You
In everything I say and do.
Through trial and blessing
May I serve You just the same.
Many needs cry to be met,
And in the rush I do forget
That You promised
All my needs You would fulfill.
Oh how easily I worry,
But it’s only when I hurry
And I don’t take time
To hear You and be still.
Oh, Lord, help me be
The wife and mother I should be,
The friend, the sister, the daughter,
All the roles I play.
For it’s only by your grace
That I don’t fall upon my face
In frustration and despair
Along the way.
I have so far, Lord, to go,
But what a comfort just to know
You are right beside me,
Showing me the way.
If I seek Your kingdom first,
Then I need not fear the worst,
For I know that You
Will guide me day by day.
May my life, Lord, be a light
That others see as shining bright,
As a testament to what
Your love can do.
May they not be drawn to me
But rather only Jesus see,
As on this day
I dedicate my life to You.

RESOLVED

RESOLVED, to live with all my might while I do live.

RESOLVED, never to lose one moment of time, to improve it in the most profitable way I can.

RESOLVED, never to do anything which I should despise or think meanly in another.

RESOLVED, never to do anything out of revenge.

RESOLVED, never to do anything which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.

Jonathan Edwards, American theologian and preacher (1703-1758).

CAUGHT UP

Caught up! Who can picture it? While men and women walk the busy streets, they shall be caught up! While they bow in the secret chamber of prayer, they shall be caught up! While patient, suffering ones lie on beds of pain, they shall be caught up! While the living stand by the open graves of the dead, they shall be caught up!

And as the startled world wonders, the only record left shall be that of Enoch: "And they walked with God and they were not; for God took them" (Genesis 5:24). —James H. McConkey

THE BEST OF LIFELINE

By Rev. Larry W. Greiner

One winter's night in 1935 Fiorello LaGuardia, the irrepressible mayor of New York, showed up at a night court in the poorest ward of the city. He dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench. A tattered old woman, charged with stealing a loaf of bread, was brought before him. She defended herself by saying, "My daughter's husband has deserted her. She is sick, and her children are starving."

The shopkeeper refused to drop the charges, saying, "It's a bad neighborhood, your honor, and she's got to be punished to teach other people a lesson." LaGuardia sighed. He turned to the old woman and said, "I've got to punish you; the law makes no exceptions. Ten dollars or ten days in jail." However, even while pronouncing sentence, LaGuardia reached into his pocket, took out a ten-dollar bill, and threw it into his hat with these famous words: "Here's the ten-dollar fine, which I now remit, and furthermore, I'm going to fine everyone in the courtroom fifty cents for living in a town where a person has to steal bread so that her grandchildren can eat. Mr. Bailiff, collect the fines and give them to the defendant."

The following day, a city newspaper reported: "Forty-seven dollars and fifty cents was turned over to a bewildered old grandmother who had stolen a loaf of bread to feed her starving grandchildren. Making forced donations were a red-faced storekeeper, seventy petty criminals, and a few New York policemen."

As Christians, are we living with an awareness of those in need? Did not our Lord command us to do good works by giving, not only material possessions, but our time, our energy, ourselves? Can you think of someone in need right now? Is there anything you can do to help meet that need? What would Jesus do?

"Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited Me’ I was in prison and you came to Me’. And then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give you drink, see You a stranger and invite You in, or naked and clothe You, or sick or in prison and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even to the least of them, you did it to Me’" (Matthew 25: 34-40).

EXPLANATION LATER

There are many people in the world thoroughly shut in—some by sickness, some by old age, some by special duties that will not allow them to go forth, some surrounded by deluges of misfortune and trouble.

A hand was stretched down from Heaven to close the door. It was a divine hand as well as a kind hand. "The Lord shut him in." You thought it was an accident, ascribable to the carelessness or misdoings of others, or a mere "happen-so." No! No! God had gracious designs for your betterment, for the cultivation of your patience, for the strengthening of your faith, for the advantage you might gain by seclusion, for your eternal salvation. He put you in a schoolroom where you could learn in six months or a year more than you could have learned anywhere else in a lifetime. He turned the lattice or pulled down the blinds of the sickroom or put your swollen foot on an ottoman or held you amid the pillows of a couch which you could not leave for some reason that you may not now understand, but which He has promised He will explain to you satisfactorily—if not in this world, then in the world to come—for He said: "What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter" (John 13:7).

PRAISE & PRAYER

bulletPraise God for the birth of Daniel Graham to Wendy & Bob Lefko, Jan. 16, 2003, weighing in at 10 lbs, 2 oz.
bulletPraise the Lord for the new van. We picked it up Monday evening, Dec. 29. To all who had a part in this miracle we thank you from the depths of our hearts. One of our Board members wrote: "We should not be surprised or amazed at the way the Lord provides. For many years we have shared with you in the ministry of FCI. It has been an education and inspiration in our lives. God provides, sustains and protects us as we are faithful to Him. He surely is faithful to us!" To God be the glory!
bulletPraise God for exciting responses to the web ministry of FCI. Hundreds have been logging on each week, with upwards of 1600 in one week. Pray that God will continue to use this aspect of the ministry to reach hearts for Christ and strengthen families. Someone just wrote: "Great website! Awesome job! Very uplifting! God bless you all!"
bulletPray for revival. The outlook is dark, but the uplook is glorious.

KOREAN KORNER

By Rev. Larry W. Greiner

I asked my Korean Youth to write down questions they have concerning God and the Bible that we could discuss and seek to find answers for from the Scriptures. Here are some of the responses: 1. Why do the Jews hate Jesus if Jesus Himself was a Jew? 2. What do I do when I question my faith? 3. Why do Christians fast, and am I too young to fast? 4. Is there such a place as purgatory like the Catholics believe? 5. What will heaven be like? 6. Is someone still a Christian if they don’t live or act like one? 6. If I keep using certain curse words will God still forgive me? 7. If I pray and ask God to make me a professional football player will he do it?

These young people are sincere when they ask these questions and we have had tremendous talks about these topics and others, using God’s Word as our source for the answers. Please continue to pray for the spiritual growth of these young Koreans. One 9th grader said our Bible Study was his favorite thing to do. Praise the Lord! Pray too that the Lord will give these South Korean Youth strength as they are now beginning to be lumped together with the North Koreans by some of their classmates.
